
World’s most trusted tech company – Google – is in news, and for very different reasons. Verily — Google’s life-sciences arm — is deploying 32 million bacteria-infected mosquitoes across Florida and California.
The target is Aedes aegypti — a stripe-legged invasive mosquito that carries Zika, dengue fever, yellow fever, and chikungunya. It has spread across the US and grown resistant to almost every pesticide thrown at it. Conventional methods are failing. So Google went a completely different direction.
Their weapon? A naturally occurring bacterium called Wolbachia. Verily breeds millions of male mosquitoes, infects them with it, and releases them into the wild. When these males mate with wild females, the eggs never hatch. The population collapses — generation by generation. No chemicals. No spraying. Just biology turned against itself.

And the robot they built to do this? It breeds one million sterile mosquitoes every week. AI and computer vision sort them by sex to ensure only males are released — because only females bite. So the entire 32 million-strong army is completely harmless to humans. This is what Google’s Debug Project has been quietly building toward since 2014.
The lesson for every innovator is that the most powerful solutions often sound completely absurd when you first hear them. What looks like the problem — more mosquitoes — is actually the solution — fewer mosquitoes.
