Who was Léon Foucault?

Léon Foucault was a 19th-century French physicist known for designing experiments that turned difficult scientific questions into measurable physical demonstrations. He initially studied medicine but later moved toward physics and became particularly interested in optics, mechanics and scientific instruments.

His most famous contribution came in 1851, when he demonstrated that the Earth rotates using a simple but ingenious device: a long, freely swinging pendulum.

Foucault made several important contributions to experimental physics. His best-known achievement was the Foucault pendulum, which provided a direct demonstration of Earth’s rotation.

He also developed an improved method for measuring the speed of light, demonstrated that light travels more slowly through water than through air, developed a gyroscope experiment to demonstrate Earth’s rotation and worked on techniques for testing telescope mirrors.

His work helped establish experimental methods that could measure phenomena that were otherwise difficult to observe directly.

How did the Foucault pendulum prove Earth rotates?

The Foucault pendulum works because of inertia. Once set swinging, the pendulum tends to maintain the same plane of oscillation while the Earth rotates beneath it. To an observer standing on Earth, the direction of the pendulum’s swing therefore appears to rotate gradually.

Foucault first demonstrated the effect on a smaller scale before presenting a larger experiment at the Paris Observatory in February 1851. The most famous demonstration followed at the Panthéon in Paris, where a roughly 67-metre pendulum made the effect visible to a large public audience.

The experiment offered something unusual for its time: a way to see Earth’s rotation without relying on astronomical observations.

A Foucault pendulum is a long pendulum that can swing freely for an extended period. As Earth rotates, the pendulum’s plane of oscillation appears to turn relative to the ground. The apparent rate of this rotation depends on the observer’s latitude.

At the poles, the effect is strongest, while at the equator a Foucault pendulum does not show the same rotation of its swing plane relative to the Earth’s surface.

Today, Foucault pendulums can be found in museums, universities and science institutions around the world as demonstrations of Earth’s rotation.

How did Foucault measure the speed of light?

Foucault also made important contributions to the measurement of light. Using a rotating mirror, he developed a method that allowed the speed of light to be measured over a relatively short laboratory distance.

In 1850, his experiments showed that light travels more slowly through water than through air. This result supported the wave theory of light over competing theories being debated at the time.

In 1862, Foucault used an improved version of the rotating-mirror method to measure the speed of light at approximately 298,000 kilometres per second, remarkably close to the modern measured value of about 299,792 kilometres per second.

Did Léon Foucault work on gyroscopes?

Yes. Foucault also used a gyroscope to demonstrate Earth’s rotation. A rapidly spinning gyroscope tends to maintain the direction of its axis because of angular momentum. Foucault recognised that this behaviour could be used to detect Earth’s rotation.

His 1852 gyroscope experiment provided another mechanical demonstration of the same planetary motion revealed by his pendulum.

The two experiments used different physical systems, but both showed how Earth’s rotation could be detected without simply watching the stars.

What did Foucault contribute to astronomy?

Foucault also worked on astronomical instruments and telescope optics. He developed a method for testing the shape of mirrors used in reflecting telescopes. Accurate mirror testing was important because even small imperfections could affect the quality of astronomical observations.

His work therefore extended beyond fundamental physics into the practical problem of building better scientific instruments.
