Everyone is talking about the NEET headlines — the paper leak, the protests, and a minister’s resignation. However, the bigger shift is happening in the background; which is the National Testing Agency (NTA) reset. The NTA has now invited scholars from every field to join in for the most comprehensive institutional strengthening in its history. In line with this, the NTA is hiring young researchers to rebuild the agency from within.
What NEET actually triggered within the NTA:
Roughly 22 lakh candidates sat for NEET-UG 2026 before allegations of a question paper leak surfaced. This prompted NTA to cancel the exam and hand the investigation to the CBI.
Protests over the following weeks expanded well beyond the paper leak itself into broader demands for transparency, accountability, and structural reforms of the examination system. These eventually contributed to Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. Now, a government-appointed reform task force chaired by Nandan Nilekani is looking after the NTA reset.
Bringing in researchers and people who work on the ground:
In a recent hiring announcement, NTA invited senior leaders to join them and most significantly opened roles for 16 young professionals – 12 in Academic Research, 2 in Legal Research, and 2 in Finance & Accounts Research. These researchers can apply through Pratibha Setu portal.

Why researchers are being hired at the NTA:
Academic, legal, and finance researchers inside the NTA change how exams are designed, how disputes are handled, and how the agency is funded and audited going forward. That’s the actual reform that will make all these efforts worthwhile.
The Centre has already introduced the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha, but legislation alone doesn’t rebuild an institution’s internal research capacity. It takes people sitting inside it, doing the work.
It’s also not the first time a Radhakrishnan-led committee has pushed in this direction. The earlier High-Level Committee, formed after the 2024 NEET-UG controversy, had already recommended multi-stage exams and a computer-assisted, pen-and-paper hybrid format specifically to make paper leaks harder to pull off.

Alongside the researcher hiring, NTA is also recruiting four senior leadership positions:
1. A psychometrics-led GM for Assessment R&D
2. A GM for Test Centre Network & Operations
3. A Chief Information Security Officer
4. A GM for Vigilance, Investigation & Forensics working with the CBI, IB, and ED.
