On July 18, 2026, Skyroot Aerospace launched Vikram-1, India’s first privately built orbital-class rocket, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The mission, called Mission Aagaman (Sanskrit for “Arrival”), reached low Earth orbit roughly 17 minutes after liftoff — making India only the third country, after the U.S. and China, with private orbital launch capability.

What is Skyroot Aerospace?

Skyroot Aerospace is a Hyderabad-based spacetech startup founded in 2018 by Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, both former ISRO engineers. The company first made history in 2022 with Vikram-S, India’s first privately built suborbital rocket. Vikram-1 is its follow-up: a fully orbital, commercial launch vehicle.

What is Vikram-1?

Vikram-1 is a four-stage small-satellite launcher — three solid-fuel stages topped by a liquid-propellant kick stage. It is built with carbon-composite structures and a partially 3D-printed cryogenic engine. It’s designed to carry:

  • Up to 350 kg to Low Earth Orbit (LEO)
  • Up to 260 kg to Sun-synchronous Orbit (SSO)

It lifted off at 12:05 PM IST on July 18, 2026, after a 35-minute hold to clear a technical issue at T-minus 5 minutes; and still reached its planned 450-km orbit on the first attempt.

What payloads did Vikram-1 carry?

Mission Aagaman carried several customer and demonstration payloads, including:

  • A technology demonstration from German company DCUBED
  • The Solaras S3 nanosatellite pathfinder from Indian startup Grahaa Space
  • Embrace, a robotic arm from Indian company Cosmoserve Space, built to capture space debris
  • Skyroot’s own SCOPE satellite, collecting flight-performance data
  • Two symbolic payloads: an 18-karat gold rocket model and a lab-grown diamond piece called “Cosmic Bloom”

How is Skyroot different from ISRO?

ISRO is India’s government space agency and has run the country’s launch program for decades. Skyroot is a privately funded company that designs, builds, and now flies its own rockets using ISRO’s Satish Dhawan launch site under the regulatory framework set up by IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre).

IN-SPACe opened India’s space sector to private players starting in 2020. Vikram-1 is the first fully private orbital flight from Indian soil, meaning a private company — not ISRO — owns the vehicle and the mission.

Skyroot became India’s first spacetech unicorn in May 2026 after raising $60 million in a round co-led by GIC and Sherpalo Ventures, taking its total funding to $160 million and its valuation to $1.1 billion — nearly double where it stood 30 months earlier.
