A piece of a SpaceX rocket just crashed into the Moon. It happened on August 5, 2026. The part was a Falcon 9 upper stage. It had been floating in space since January. It hit the Moon at over 5,000 miles per hour.

The impact happened near Einstein Crater. The rocket piece weighed about four tons. Scientists in Chile confirmed the crash. They used a powerful telescope called the Very Large Telescope. It detected gas from the impact. The gas lasted about 5 to 10 minutes.

This crash was not planned. SpaceX said it was an accident. The rocket part had helped launch two Moon landers earlier this year. Normally, it would return to Earth. This time, it stayed in space. It slowly drifted toward the Moon instead.
