July 22 is World Brain Day, the World Federation of Neurology’s annual reminder that the organ running your entire life deserves more attention than we usually give it. This year’s theme, ‘Brain Health for All,’ is about making sure everyone gets a fair shot at protecting the brain health.
Somewhere between your ears sits a machine that outperforms every data center on Earth — and it runs on about 20 watts, roughly what it takes to power a light bulb. No fans, no cooling towers, no server racks – just three pounds of tissue quietly doing what our best engineering can’t come close to matching. Read on:
1. Brain has more connections than the internet has web pages

Your brain holds around 86 billion neurons, and each one connects to thousands of others through synapses. That works out to somewhere in the range of 100 trillion to 1,000 trillion connections. For comparison, the entire indexed web is estimated to have a few billion pages. Your brain’s wiring diagram dwarfs the whole internet.

2. Brain processes information in parallel, not in a queue

Traditional supercomputers, even the fastest ones, still largely process instructions in sequence. Your brain doesn’t work that way. Billions of neurons fire simultaneously, across dozens of specialized regions, constantly cross-talking.
When you catch a ball, recognize a face, and remember a name in the same instant, you’re not running one program after another — you’re running all of them at once, on the same hardware
3. Brain runs on almost no power

Typical supercomputers draw around 20 megawatts of electricity – enough to power a small town. Your brain runs its trillion-plus computations on approximately 20 watts, pulled straight from your breakfast. Nobody has built a chip that comes close to this level of efficiency.
It’s a big reason why “neuromorphic computing” i.e. chips designed to mimic how neurons work, have become one of the most active frontiers in hardware research.
4. Brain rewrites its own circuitry as it runs

No supercomputer can redesign its own architecture while it’s running a job. Your brain does this constantly. It’s called neuroplasticity, the ability to physically reshape connections between neurons based on what you learn, practice, or experience.
Learn a new language, pick up an instrument, or recover from an injury, and your brain isn’t just storing new data, it’s rebuilding the hardware to fit.
5. Brain predicts information before it computes

Modern chips calculate answers when asked. Your brain often has the answer half-built before the question arrives. Neuroscientists often describe the brain as a prediction engine, constantly generating a model of what’s about to happen next.
That’s why a typo doesn’t stop you mid-sentence, and why you can catch a ball before you’ve consciously “calculated” its trajectory. It’s not brute-force computation. It’s anticipation, running continuously, in the background.
The whole message behind World Brain Day is that something this remarkable should not be taken for granted. Regular exercise, sleep, blood pressure checks, and knowing the early warning signs of stroke or neurological illness are simple, low-cost ways to keep this three-pound supercomputer running.
