India’s young science talent just delivered its best-ever showing at the International Chemistry Olympiad (ICHO) 2026, and the story behind the medals is as inspiring as the scoreboard itself. The Innovators Jam brings you a quick round-up of this achievement:

A clean sweep at International Chemistry Olympiad 2026:

At the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad, held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from July 10–19, all four members of Team India walked away with gold. This is a first-ever all-gold haul for the country at this competition. India finished joint Rank 1, sharing the top spot with China, Vietnam, and an individual participant from Russia, in a field of 363 students from 93 countries — the largest ICHO edition to date.

According to the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE-TIFR), which coordinates India’s Olympiad program, this marked the country’s 27th appearance at ICHO — and its strongest result yet.

The gold medalists:

• Debadatta Priyadarshi (Bhubaneswar, Odisha)
• Harshit Singla (Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab)
• Kabeer Chhillar (Delhi/Gurugram)
• Sandeep Kuchi (Hyderabad, Telangana)

Among the four gold winners, Kabeer Chhillar stands out for a rare double achievement in the same year. Just weeks before representing India on the world stage in chemistry, Kabeer had already made headlines as a JEE Main 2026 topper, scoring a perfect 300/300. He followed that up with an AIR 2 in JEE Advanced 2026, missing the top rank by a single mark with 329/360.

Part of a bigger golden run for Indian science:

The ICHO win didn’t happen in isolation. It came right on the heels of a historic run for Indian students on the global science-olympiad circuit:

• At the 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2026 in Bucaramanga, Colombia, all five Indian participants won gold, helping India secure joint World No. 1 among 87 countries.
• At the 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2026 in Vilnius, Lithuania, India bagged one gold and three silver medals.

Together, these results paint a picture of a rising generation of Indian innovators dominating chemistry, physics, and biology on the world stage in the same season.

Mentors behind the medals:

India’s ICHO 2026 campaign was guided by Head Mentor Prof. Subhajit Bandyopadhyay (IISER Kolkata) and Mentor Dr. Indrani Das Sen (HBCSE), with Scientific Observers Dr. Anubendu Adhikary (IIT Kharagpur) and Dr. Jayasree Gopalakrishnan (NES Ratnam College, Mumbai) rounding out the delegation.
