For centuries, humans have tried to decode what pets are thinking. A wagging tail, a sudden bark, a midnight meow; all interpreted through guesswork, instinct, and emotion. Now, a Chinese startup – called Meng Xiaoyi – claims artificial intelligence may finally bridge that communication gap.
This Hangzhou-based company has introduced an AI-powered smart collar called PettiChat. It is a wearable device that allegedly translates pet sounds, body language, and emotional signals into human language in real time.

The company says the collar uses multimodal AI trained on over 1.5 million pet audio samples and thousands of hours of behavioral video data collected alongside veterinarians and volunteers over two years. The system reportedly analyzes vocal tones, movement patterns, and behavioral cues before generating human-like responses within seconds.
In demos released online, a cat’s meow becomes “I want to play,” while a barking dog is translated into phrases like “I’m hungry.” The startup claims the system can recognize more than 20 emotional states with over 90% contextual accuracy. Independent scientific validation, however, has not yet been published.

The PettiChat collar weighs just 27 grams, attaches to existing pet collars, and includes GPS tracking, water resistance, and app integration across Android and iOS. The companion app reportedly stores conversation history, behavioral analytics, and adaptive AI profiles that “learn” individual pet personalities over time.
While the idea sounds futuristic, the technology reflects a larger shift happening across consumer AI. Companies worldwide are racing to build emotionally intelligent systems, not just for humans, but for animals too. AI-powered pet tech has quietly emerged as one of the fastest-growing niches in consumer electronics, with startups experimenting with emotion detection, health monitoring, and even interspecies communication.

Scientists remain skeptical about whether machines can truly “translate” animal language. Many experts argue that pets communicate through highly contextual behaviors rather than structured language systems, making literal translation extraordinarily difficult. Critics also warn that AI-generated interpretations could encourage owners to anthropomorphize animal behavior.
Even so, products like PettiChat reveal where AI is heading next: beyond productivity and chatbots, into the deeply emotional parts of human life.
The future of AI may not just help humans talk to machines. It may try to help humans talk to everything.
