The India Meteorological Department is now using AI to predict rainfall at a hyperlocal 1 km resolution, potentially changing how millions of farmers prepare for monsoon season.
India just took a major leap in climate-tech. For generations, Indian farmers have planted by instinct and prayer, but that’s about to change.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has launched two AI-powered forecasting tools that could rewire how 140 million farming households relate to the monsoon.
What’s new:
The first system delivers block-level monsoon onset forecasts every Wednesday, up to four weeks in advance. It will cover 3,196 blocks across 15 states — concentrated in rainfed regions where timing is everything.
The second is the real jaw-dropper. A pilot for Uttar Pradesh generates rainfall forecasts at 1-km spatial resolution, 10 days out, pulling data from rain gauges, weather stations, Doppler radars, and satellites. At that resolution, a farmer knows whether their field gets rain, not just their district.
Why it matters:
Traditional forecasts operate at 12–25 km grids. A single district can mask a dozen microclimates and that was a problem. One kilometre changes the math on sowing, irrigation, and harvest decisions entirely.
Outputs will flow directly to farmers through the Agri Stack platform and APIs built by the Ministry of Agriculture. These meaning forecasts could eventually auto-trigger insurance assessments or credit decisions.
A predecessor of this system already delivered monsoon onset forecasts to 38 million farmers in 2025, successfully flagging that year’s anomalous early dry spell.
