India achieved a major milestone in its nuclear energy journey as the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu achieved criticality. This means the reactor has successfully started a self-sustaining nuclear reaction, allowing it to operate continuously. Developed by Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, this reactor is a key part of India’s long-term nuclear strategy.
What makes this achievement significant is that the PFBR is a fast breeder reactor, designed to produce more fuel than it consumes. It plays a central role in India’s three-stage nuclear programme, originally envisioned by Homi J. Bhabha, which aims to eventually use the country’s vast thorium reserves for sustainable energy.
With this development, India joins a small group of countries with advanced nuclear capabilities. It marks a strong step toward energy independence by reducing reliance on imported fuels while also supporting cleaner, low-carbon power generation.
The takeaway is clear: India is moving closer to a future where it can generate large-scale, reliable, and sustainable energy using its own resources.
