On May 19, 2026, the Royal Society in London announced its new fellows. Two Indians made the list: Dr Soumya Swaminathan and Manindra Agrawal. Within hours, labs in Chennai were celebrating, IIT corridors were buzzing, and X platform was flooded with scientists, students, doctors, and mathematicians sharing collective joy.
This doesn’t happen often. Science is competitive. Indian academia is famously hierarchical, but something about this announcement cut through all of that. To understand why, you have to understand what Dr Soumya Swaminathan and Manindra Agrawal represent.
Who is cheering and why does their cheer matter?

Four reasons the Indian scientific community is celebrating:
Both stayed in India and won anyway
This is the one that hits hardest for working Indian scientists. The most persistent pain point in Indian academia is the brain drain. Manindra Agrawal did his BTech, PhD, entire academic career, and now serves as Director — all at IIT Kanpur. Dr Soumya Swaminathan’s foundational research was done at ICMR and NIRT in Chennai. Both became Royal Society Fellows without relocating to Oxford, MIT, or Harvard. That is a direct, undeniable rebuttal to the brain drain narrative.
They worked on problems that matter to India
TB, HIV, Paediatric pulmonology and Computational number theory applied to cryptography. These are not fashionable research areas by Western standards but they are urgent Indian realities. Dr Swaminathan’s election is a landmark for women in science
In 365 years of Royal Society, only two Indian women have ever become Fellows. Both are alive and working right now. Agrawal’s AKS test is pure science India rarely gets credit for
India is celebrated globally for its software engineers, its IIT graduates who go on to lead Google and Microsoft. But pure theoretical breakthroughs — the kind that solve millennium-old problems and get published in the Annals of Mathematics — are rarer and less recognised. What makes this different from a typical prize announcement
India gets a lot of international awards such as the Bhatnagar Prizes, Padma awards, honorary doctorates. Most are acknowledged politely, shared on institutional social media, and forgotten within a week. This is different. The reason is what the Royal Society represents to the global scientific community.
The Royal Society elects based purely on scientific merit, through a peer-vote by existing Fellows. There is no government lobbying, no institutional quota, no diversity target that applies at this level. When two Indians get in, it means the world’s most distinguished scientists looked at their work and said: this is among the best science produced on this planet. That is why the cheering inside Indian laboratories is so loud right now.
